The 2017 Honda Clarity is the successor of FCX Clarity. Toyota Mirai is considered to be the chief rival of the new Clarity Fuel Cell Vehicle from Honda. According to Honda’s announcement, it possesses the fuel cell vehicle with the biggest trunk on the market. The Clarity Fuel Cell is heavier compared to the previous FCX model as Honda states. The new model is considered to be quicker than FCX as it sprints to 60 MPH in 9.3 seconds driving the front wheels.
2017 Honda Clarity Design
Regarding its body, it is slightly taller and wider, making the inner area more spacious compared to FCX Clarity. The wheelbase is elegantly shorter. The front end of the vehicle is identical to the latest design style. However interconnected headlights and fog-lamps have been added. Air intakes and rear bumper make a more sporty and venturesome impression.
The inside design fallows new shapes to help a better seating posture. Seat covers and the spacious cabin are made of high quality materials. Controls have been better streamlined compared to the previous model. Both Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto are supported by its infotainment system. The Clarity Fuel Cell is excellently prepared for emergencies. The Power Exporter 1000 (a Honda-developed inverter) connected to the vehicle’s charging port, allows the owner to pre-charge the battery at home by extending pure EV range. This function transmits AC power to various standard electrical outlets.
Further changes have been done on the previous model regarding engine. The 2017 Honda Clarity has a smaller, but more powerful engine, reaching the capacity of 174 horsepower. The improved power density of the model ranges from 2 kW/l up to 3.1 kW/l in the fuel cell, which is 50 percent higher compared to the previous model. Honda has decided to lower the fuel cell stack, using only 30 percent less cells in its new model. The improved compact stack now puts out 100 more kilowatts at 330 volts and it is placed on the top of the electric motor. In case of the previous model’s design, on the electric motor the power controller and voltage regulator were placed. As electric car, 2017 Honda Clarity is an EV with onboard electrical generators. It powers the Clarity Fuel Cell with an electric motor of 130-kW/174-hp. The controller of the new model has a tinier size which allows its incorporation to the motor housing. In the new model, the smaller voltage regulator is placed on top of the fuel cell.
The two hydrogen tanks are placed under the rear seat and the trunk’s floor. Considering their capacity, the two tanks together should be enough for around a 300 miles ride. Buyers must consider the growing number of hydrogen fuel stations around the world. Honda announced to provide free fuel for three complete years from the date of purchase. Comparing 2017 Honda Clarity to a V-6 engine and transmission, the entire set-up size must be the same.
Price of Honda Clarity
Honda’s officials announced an estimated cost of $60,000 for 2017 Honda Clarity. For lease, the model will be available for about $500/month. The model will be available in certain parts of California later in the year 2016 as Honda announced in January at the 2016 Washington, D.C. Auto Show.
