With this upcoming 2018 BMW X3, Bavarian Motor Works looks to make sure that they have a product which is simply unavoidable for buyers looking for a mid-size SUV. Mid-size SUVs are taking on compact crossover aspects for quite some time now. This market segment is heating up with every new release.
After quite a few concepts, Nurburgring track tests, and prototypes, latest spy photos show a comprehensible detailed 2018 BMW X3 running the course with minimal camouflage. And with a 2017 release date closing in, there are quite a few leaked specs and details to mention and comment.
A Redesigned 2018 BMW X3
Sleeker and sharper headlamps, more shapely and pronounced air intakes, smarter signature twin-kidney grille – this new generation look much better.
Chassis or body-frame for this new model will be based completely on the new CLAR modular platform. This platform debuted with BMWs 2016 7 series and will be incorporated into all new models including this one. Weight will drop by at least 200 pounds thanks to aluminum and magnesium constituents typical to this modular platform.
Expect a slightly longer wheelbase which will be the only changes in dimensions compared to the current generation. The stance seems to have improved with a lower roofline and more gradual ascent to the rear end. Subtle character lines follow through either side of the vehicle giving it a powerful accent.
Speaking of the rear end, it will sport a completely new design with new lamps and overall structure. Brand new alloy wheels and a single-piece liftgate finish what can be called to some extent – a successful remodel.
2018 BMW X3 Interior Modifications
BMWs iDrive info and tech system will be the centerpiece to everything that goes around in this car. New additions in hardware include a digital instrument cluster and an innovative free-to-use infotainment screen on the dashboard. This is something that will lure buyers towards this car.
Other infotainment and in-cabin tech features will include: –
- Automatic dual zone and optional multi-zone climate control.
- Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
- Voice activated Navigation.
- Smartphone Integration.
Luxury specs will include brushed aluminum and other metal accents along with optional wooden trims not to mention upscale textured plastics.
2018 BMW X3 Performance
This is where this car becomes a highly marketable product. Engine and performance are one of the most important features in this mid-size SUV cum crossover segment. Engine options with this model will start with a 2.0-liter Inline 4 producing 248 hp and 258 lb-ft for the base 30i (gasoline) and 30D (diesel) models.
Higher 40s models will come with the all-new 3.0-liter Inline 6 cylinder engines capable of producing more than 335 hp and 369 lb-ft. torque.
There will be other high-end performance oriented models with tuned engines which BMW sells with their universal ‘M’ performance brand. These are to take on the likes of Porsche Macan and Mercedes-AMG GLC series performance models.
There are two engines which come in this sub-segment both which are tuned 3.0-liter engines in the 40s models with outputs above 350 hp. A full-fledged 2018 BMW X3M will have an output near 400 hp to take on the Macan Turbo.
There are talks of a 2.0-liter Hybrid engine too from the X5 which will be included in the line-up later to provide for a plug-in hybrid model. Net power specs are expected to be around 300 hp and 330 lb-ft. with a 13 mile range on pure electric power.
The transmission will be an 8 Speed Auto with no manual options. Drivetrains will be between RWD or sDrive and BMWs excellent xDrive or AWD techs.
